taoist cosmology:

Feng Shui

Much of Thoth’s earlier illustrative work draws from the rich traditions of Feng Shui¹ and Taoist² cosmology. This extensive body of work includes prints, paintings, vector designs, and written works, such as symbol descriptions and blog posts. Recently, Thoth revisited and reworked some of these designs, while also creating a few new prints and paintings inspired by this fascinating field.

Given the breadth of this collection, Thoth has curated a selection of the most significant print series available here, each accompanied by related blog posts. The series is divided into three sections.

Five Elements

In Chinese and Taoist cosmology, the five elements (Wu-Xing, 五行) form a fundamental conceptual scheme, which also includes the five cardinal directions (with the center being the fifth). Each element is associated with one of the five heavenly beasts, also known as the five celestial animals. This series features prints representing the five heavenly beasts, the five elements, and a chart illustrating the cycles of these five phases.

Baguq Life Areas

Bagua (八卦), meaning ‘eight symbols’, refers to the eight trigrams that form the foundation of the I Ching and Taoist cosmology. In Feng Shui, the relationships between these trigrams and the cycle of the five phases are depicted in the Bagua map — a 3 × 3 magic square grid. Each of the nine squares within this grid corresponds to a life area, connected to specific elements, energies, themes, colors, shapes, cardinal directions, seasons, and other qualities. This series includes symbolic illustrations for each life area, as well as Bagua and I Ching-related prints.

Simbolic Feng Shui

In the Western world, Feng Shui is often recognized for its use of symbols, lucky charms, and decoration tips to enhance specific life areas — what is commonly known as Symbolic Feng Shui. This emphasis has naturally led to the incorporation of new symbols from various traditions. This series showcases classic Taoist symbols alongside complementary symbols from other cultures and traditions.
